Living with uncertainty can make you anxious and unsettled. I know that I am uncomfortable with uncertainty and prefer knowing where I am working,  where I will be living, and that the stock market will be relatively stable.  You get the idea…

Every day people begin new careers, lose or change jobs, get divorced, date, remarry, or break up.  Sometimes I even get a knot in my stomach when I listen to the nightly news.  Eeek!

I’m sure that most of the time you are satisfied with the way things are going in your life.  But then boom, something happens and living with uncertainty becomes a reality.   Everyone hits a rough patch where they just don’t know what they are going to do or who they are going to be doing it with.

Let’s talk about how you are going to find peace in any situation where there is uncertainty.  Remember that our objective is to  eliminate the fear and insecurity that uncertainty brings.

Replace any negative thoughts with positive ones  Your thoughts and beliefs have great power so be mindful of what you are thinking.  For example:   If you believe that you will not get a job, you won’t.  If you believe you are not lovable, you are not.  If do not feel safe, protected, and abundant, you won’t be.  So be positive!

–  Embrace uncertainty and don’t fight it.  This is the time when opportunities are presented and personal growth occurs.  Accept the uncertainty and stop resisting.  Since uncertainty is a part of life, learn to “go with the flow” and adapt to it.  Yes, there is fear of the unknown but think about the wonderful adventures you will be experiencing.  Wahoo!

Live in the present moment.  Focus your attention on the now.  Don’t think about the past or worry about the future because it will not serve you. Since your present impacts your future, know what your intention is and act accordingly.  When you focus on the present moment you will feel less anxious, less uncertain, and more secure.

Be Grateful.  You may have lost your job, your boyfriend just dumped you or you got on the scale and learned you gained 15 lbs even though you have been dieting.  Holy moly!   Be grateful for all that you have and everything that you are.  Think about the wonderful people in your life, your sense of humor, your good health, and your abundant bank account.  When you are in gratitude mode, it is impossible to feel sorry for yourself.

Visualize your uncertainty.   We’re going to create a person named Sam who represents my uncertainty.  For example, I’ll have a conversation with  Sam and ask him why he’s around.  Why does Sam, uncertainty,  make me uncomfortable?  What am I afraid of?  What is the worst thing that can happen?  What do I need to learn from this situation? Addressing  Sam will bring to the forefront my concerns and fears relating to uncertainty.  Sam, please be kind…

Welcome FailureView failure as an opportunity to learn.  Since it provides you with immediate feedback and can be brutally honest, listen and accept what it is telling you.  The beauty of making mistakes is that you learn from the experience.  Understand what went wrong, change direction, stay focused and keep trying.  No one likes to fail but unfortunately failure is one of the reasons you fear uncertainly.

Meditate.  It helps quiet the mind while calming you down.  When you meditate, the anxiety melts away. It’s as if the universe wraps its arms around you and gives you a great big hug.  It enables you to listen to your inner voice, obtain a better understanding of your fears, and provides you with viable solutions.  Ahhh!

Exercise.  Last, but not least, is exercise.  When you exercise, endorphins are released which make you feel oh-so-good. It also enables you to eliminate some of the stress that you are holding onto.  Exercise makes you feel stronger, more confident, and more independent.  You will believe that you can accomplish anything!

Know that uncertainly can be a blessing because it serves as a catalyst for self discovery and growth. The uncertainty creates the impetus for you explore all options while creating new experiences.  What fun!

Resist the need to control the situation, stop fighting it, and enjoy the moment.  Take pleasure in the uncertainty because who knows where it is going to take you.  Let’s hop on our boat and float down the river of life together.

Hugs,

Ilene
